How fast can fluids squeeze through micro-pores?

چکیده

We use a one dimensional symmetric exclusion model to study pressure and osmosis driven flows through molecular-sized channels, such as biological membrane channels and zeolite pores. Analytic expressions are found for the steady-state flow which show rich nonlinear behavior. We find a maximum in the flow rates depending upon pore radius, pore energetics, reservoir temperature, and driving force. We also present exact mean-field results of transport through pores with internal defects. The interesting nonlinear dependences suggest numerous diagnostic experiments in biological and zeolitic systems which may reveal the features presented.

Study on the mechanism of the squeeze-strengthen effect in magnetorheological fluids

Current magnetorheological (MR)fluids have the limitation that their yield stresses are not strong enough to meet some industrial requirements. X. Tang, X. Zhang, and R. Tao [ J. App. Phys87, 2634 (2000)] proposed a method to achieve high-efficiency MR fluids by study of squeeze-strengthen effect. But there is little report on its mechanism. This paper aims to investigate this effect through ex...

An Irregular Lattice Pore Network Model Construction Algorithm

Pore network modeling uses a network of pores connected by throats to model the void space of a porous medium and tries to predict its various characteristics during multiphase flow of various fluids. In most cases, a non-realistic regular lattice of pores is used to model the characteristics of a porous medium. Although some methodologies for extracting geologically realistic irregular net...

Investigation of Mr Fluids in the Oscillatory Squeeze Mode

The paper summarises the results of laboratory testing of three commercially available magnetorheological (MR) fluids operated in the oscillatory squeeze mode. Tested fluids include the Basonetic 204 and Basonetic 4035 (BASF) and MRF-122EG (Lord Corporation). The oscillatory squeeze mode produces large forces at small displacements. This feature may be well utilised in fabrication of new MR dev...

Modelling Bidispersive Local Thermal Non-Equilibrium Flow

In this work, we present a system of equations which describes non-isothermal flow in a bidispersive porous medium under conditions of local thermal non-equilibrium. The porous medium consists of macro pores, and in the solid skeleton are cracks or fissures which give rise to micro pores. The temperatures in the solid skeleton and in the fluids in the macro and micro pores are all allowed to be...

Homogeneous Electrorheological Fluids Applied to Vibration Control

The purpose Electrorheological (ER) fluids are capable of providing continuously variable damping forces in response to an electrical stimulus. Many prototype ER dampers, described in the literature, have been based upon exploiting the variable shear properties of ER fluids. Recently, an alternative mode of operation, namely squeeze-flow, has been identified and investigated. Furthermore, most ...
